When peace like a river attendeth my way

When sorrows like sea billows roll

Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say

It is well, it is well with my soul

I feel so many Christians need to get this verse from It Is Well With My Soul tattooed on their heart right now. We are entering a new year and maybe it’s a chance to re-focus for a lot of people. 2020 is over and we are entering 2021. I don’t want to sound negative but I believe 2021 is potentially going to be much more challenging than 2020, but in a different way. I am not going to get into all of those details because it would mean be getting into the politics and all that and I don’t want to get into all of that. But, the Church and Christians that make up that Church are going to have a lot of tough decisions to make. We need to approach this year with a “It Is Well With My Soul” mentality. Not because we don’t care. We should care and prepare. But, we should have an assurance in the ONE who completely has it within His grip. Verse 2….

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come

Let this blest assurance control

That Christ has regarded my helpless estate

And has shed His own blood for my soul

Yes, we need to keep guard and be prepared. But, we need to look ahead and have hope for what God has in store for us. I believe God has been speaking in so many ways to different believers and Churches with this message….”I am with You”. And if we lose sight of that then we lose sight of Him. Christ is bigger than all of this. An even further, He is in completely in control of all of this. This isn’t God “dropping the ball”. This isn’t God “slipping on a banana”. This is an era where God calls His believers to dig their heals in and trust in Him. BLESSED ASSURANCE.

Again, this isn’t God dropping the ball or accidently slipping on a banana.

Ok, maybe 2020 has been a rough one for you and hope is scarce for you. Let’s read verse 3:

My sin, oh the bliss of this glorious thought 

My sin, not in part, but the whole

Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

Romans 5:8 “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

He died for you. He died for me. Why in the world would He do that and then just decide to leave us hanging? Do you think that is what He is doing? Leaving us hanging? I KNOW He isn’t.

Picture this, you’re on a boat. The captain is driving the boat down the river and fog is filling the air. You cannot see five feet in front of you. You know there are alligators, snakes, etc. filling the water so fear sets in. What if the captain hits the river bank and we sink? What if we get stuck? What if these predators get inside the boat? All the while the captain is up on the top level steering and in complete control of the boat because he can see above the fog. We can’t but he can. (Maybe that needs to be our slogan going into 2021. We can’t but He can!) The captain sees every twist of the river. Every predator in the water. Every river bank. He even sees the destination. You just have to trust him in the process. I think you see where I am going.

There are predators circling the boat right now. There is fog filling the air obscuring the view a bit. There are a lot of believers jumping off the boat in fear only to endanger themselves even further. Even so…It Is Well. Because HE is in control. Some people find comfort in the miss guided words “this too shall pass”, which isn’t in scripture by the way. Listen, what if it DOESN’T come to pass? Is your faith in the passing of the storm? Or is your faith in the one who controls the storm? It may NOT come to pass as we want it to. But, what I do know is the King of the earth. The creator of all things. The life giver. The provider. The merciful, gracious, forgiving God who IS peace and IS love is in the captains seat. So, even if the fog is blocking it all. It Is Well!!!! Because He is in charge. Peace in the storm. Joy in the struggle. Hope in a hopeless situation. That is what we find when we put our hope and trust in HIM. When we get to a point where we can say “It Is Well because I know HIM”. We have the ultimate connection, :D. “I know a guy…” And because I know this GUY…..
