John 15:3-4 “Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

I think we live in a world right now that absolutely hates the word Dependency. If you are a MAN you don’t need instruction or help because YOU GOT THIS. Women these days want to prove that they can do it on their own. We all want to be an island. I believe very much that this scripture proves the need for dependency. We cannot do this on our own. This word abide has a lot packed in with it. It’s an all encompassing act of obedience, trust, and rest in the Savior. The Word purifies us and makes us clean. But, the next step is abiding in God. If you are in the Word of God but not obedient to it then why are you in the Word? If you want to KNOW God but then ignore Him what are you doing?

Obedience – I believe obedience to be the greatest act of worship we can offer our God. Usually it means setting aside our own agenda to uphold HIS. Obedience is hard at times but it pleases our Father far greater than any sacrifice. 1 Samuel 15:22. My brother, Brent, and I used to go caving a lot when living in Kentucky. We would go with this guy, Jeff, in our Church there. Now, I am not talking about the guided tours. I am talking about the kind of caves that people go to and get lost in. The kind of caves where you have to leave a coat behind pointing in the direction you need to return. Jeff knew the caves though. We listened to his direction. Without lights it was so dark you could not see your hand in front of your face. So, why IN THE WORLD would we ignore Jeff and go a completely different direction than where he said? Seems stupid doesn’t it? just saying…

Trust – My Dad used an analogy years ago when preaching about a boat Captain. I can’t remember all the details but I do remember him painting a picture of a boat going down a river full of fog. Now, the boat Captain was up at the wheel and could see over the fog and where he was going. We, couldn’t see five feet in front. You had to trust that the Captain knew where he was going. Our perception would throw out caution signs that we could wreck at any moment. But, he knew… So, why IN THE WORLD would we freak out and not trust the Captain to get us to our location if we KNEW that he could see down the river? Seems stupid doesn’t it? just saying…

Rest – For some reason, one thing I love to do when swimming is to take a deep breathe and just go under and float. The quiet is so relaxing and calming to me. All I can hear is my own breath. Seriously, it is so calming to me. To me, resting in God is a similar thing. It’s when we are submerged in the presence of God and just float there. Listen to each inhale and exhale of the presence of God. Listening for His voice. After all, how can we be obedient to something we aren’t hearing or listening for? To stop. Tune all the racket of the world out. And put yourself in a place to just hear HIS voice. We find complete peace and refuge there. So why IN THE WORLD would we avoid that? Seems stupid doesn’t’ it? just saying…

So, God desires for us to Abide in Him. We cannot do this without Him. We cannot shine light without the light source. We cannot defeat death without the life giver. We cannot overcome weakness without the ALMIGHTY. We SHOULD be completely codependent on God. After all, why IN THE WORLD would we want to function without Him? Seems stupid doesn’t it? Just saying…

So, are you abiding in Him? Are you resting in Him? Are you listening for His voice and being obedient and in that trusting Him with your YES? He says, “Abide in me, and I in you”. My challenge to you is to put yourself in a place where you are completely dependent on Him. For everything.

I promise. He will NOT let you down.
