Steampunk Soul

steampunk-abstract-time-is-complicated-mike-savad Recently, the recycled nature of the “Steampunk” style struck my mind.  Sometimes, objects made in this type of design have parts that appear to have no useful function apart from making it look “cool” or interesting.  Yet each piece has been plucked from the rubbish heap and reformed into something with greater strength and purpose.  Nothing is wasted.

From the beginning, God has taken chaos and created function and beauty.  His power transforms the ruins of our lives, no matter what the cause or extent of devastation.  Jesus restores us gently, patiently, and with great empathy.

“May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.  May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.”  I Thessalonians 5:23-24

Whatever the “thorn” is in your life, God normally works WITH it to change the system, as opposed to removing it.  He gives us grace to keep walking, for He has planned good outcomes from before time began.  Grace will get you up when you find you cannot.  He has already accomplished it!  Many times the system fails because the people who need help the most cannot access it.  When Jesus cured someone who could not walk, they were not cured because they got up; they got up BECAUSE they were cured!  Religion often makes healing and growth a “bootstrap operation”.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Anything manmade makes insane rules about self-effort achieving growth.  This leads to worship of self because focusing on the law produces focus on self instead of the Lamb that was slain from before the foundation of the world.  Jesus longs for us to admit our powerlessness over our mess and submit it to Him.  Then we can use His authority to work and grow.  God gives us the strength, power, and wherewithal for obedience.  Then He blesses us for our cooperation.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, so that no one may boast.  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10

We receive this power through the Holy Spirit, our Helper, Guide, Counsellor, and Encourager.  Spending time in the presence of Jesus creates immense and unimagined healing.  This is why the Word tells us to pray unceasingly.  Communion with God means talking and listening to our best Friend.   He longs to love us, heal us, and re-create us.  If we allow Him, He will weld things together within us in ways no one else could possibly think of, perhaps with a few of those cool turning cogs.  Then He will breathe His life into us so we will radiate His sparkling love to a dark and hurting world.  They need Him so badly, just like us.
