I am going to say something that is meant to be encouraging but will not seem as such at first: you will never be good enough for God’s love. You can never be or do anything to deserve it. We are all flawed, imperfect, and totally incapable of fixing ourselves. And His love is so rich, so deep, so pure, so overwhelming that flawed, imperfect creatures such as us can never hope to deserve it.
Now here comes the encouraging part: we do not have to be good enough. He knows all there is to know about us, and He loves us anyway, exactly as we are. Isn’t that beautiful? He isn’t waiting for us to attain a certain level of righteousness or reach perfection before He pours His affection on us. He loves us, scarred and marred by sin as we are. He loves you and me, and He went to great lengths to prove that to us.
Truthfully, I myself struggle to receive this unconditional love. The truth of His love is difficult to fully grasp sometimes, like trying to grasp water. But like water, His love is meant to be drank in, to be received. That is when true healing, cleansing, and transformation begins–when we stop trying to be good enough to earn His love and just receive it as the free, unconditional gift that it is.
“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made.” Psalm 145:8,9
