We have no control over where, how, when, or to whom we are born into this world. Many people know what it is like to be unchosen, like the kid always last to be picked for a sports team. Sometimes people believe they have made too many mistakes for too long, that there would be little left of their lives to salvage, barring a huge miracle, supposing that even then, they would “mess up” whatever chances were given to them. They have made the mistake of thinking that their usefulness depends solely on themselves. That type of thinking is at once simplistic and convoluted, continually folding back in on itself until the person implodes.
God has a drastically different strategy for His children. Yahweh intentionally elected weak and foolish people as His instruments to communicate both His power and love to the world.
“But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things that are strong…so that no man may boast before God.”
I Corinthians 1:27,29
Scripture tells us Jesus chose us before the universe was created. He chose us for His own people. The profundity of that choice has always overwhelmed my mind and heart. He did not choose us because of anything we are or did…He chose us because of who HE is, because God is love, light, acceptance, and creativity’s source.
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvallous light.”
I Peter 2:9
His intention for us is that we look to Him for all we are and need. We need not whip up the substance or even the will to carry out His purposes. He provides that for us; all we need to do is to choose Him in response to His love. As believers, we are to determinedly keep choosing Him daily if we are to effect changes in the places God places us. We have the responsibility to repent of our complacency, our comfort zones, to step out in uncompromising action through faith. The times we live in demand deliberate purpose more than ever before, knowing that God is calling His people home. Make no mistake; if you belong to Him, He has impressively remarkable plans for the work He gives you. This work is to be carried out passionately, casting human caution aside, actively ardent in our dependency on Jesus. That is what faith is for.
“God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord JesusChrist. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.”
II Thessalonians 2:13-14, 16-17
Something else that rocked my world is that if we belong to Him, we have no right to have low self-esteem! Jesus once showed me this through a scene in the movie “The Two Towers”,second book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. After Eowyn tells Aragorn she fears neither death nor pain, Aragorn asks her what she does fear. She replies, “A cage. To stay behind bars until use and old age accept them, and all chance of valor has gone beyond recall or desire.” Aragorn responds, “You are a daughter of kings, a shield maiden of Rohan. I do not think that will be your fate.”
Jesus has definite blueprints for how we live our lives. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” No matter how “unchosen” we may feel in this world, our hearts can rest in HIS choice of us. And that election trumps all other opinions and ideas. Get moving! He has things for you to do, and most especially to encourage and exhort those who are around you. I love this verse from Hebrews:
“And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds…encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”
Hebrews 10:24, 26”
Take heart, dear one. You are selected for an immense purpose in His kingdom. As an old Steven Curtis Chapman song says, “Let’s follow our leader into the glorious unknown. This is life like no other. This is the great adventure!”
