Now that I’m commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” No, the word is very near you: it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it. ~ Deuteronomy 30:11-14
This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him~ Deuteronomy 30:19-20
The next following chapters in Deuteronomy, God tells Moses that he is soon to die, unable to cross the Jordan into the promised land of the Israelites. God tells Moses that He will lead them across and they would again become perverse and forget His commandments and how He will become angry. He gave Moses a song as a witness of the future and told Moses to teach the song that would one day testify against the upcoming generations, who would forget His commandments. “I know what they are disposed to do, even before I bring them into the land I promised them on oath.”~ Deuteronomy 31:21
This blows my mind. God chose to create a world where He knew sin would enter and distort. He chose people to become His who, in spite of all His blessings and miracles, would still turn the other way, and be perverse in the worst way. He even knew that they would do it time and time again. Jesus, knowing this, still chose suffering as a man and death as a man. God knows we’re a helpless cause. He still chose to save us.
Love is so much bigger than what we can imagine or grasp. We get only a tiny glimpse or idea of it in relationship to each other. Love was already bestowed upon us. The decision was made to love even though we are unlovable. The decision was made to forgive us even though time and time again we screw up; to give us life even though we didn’t deserve to live.
The option to live is there; it is up to us to choose it. Jesus is the True Vine. As branches alone we can’t live let alone bear any fruit. The vine is a direct source to life and only through the Vine can we receive from this Source. Think of all that you have done and gotten for yourself. Are you ever really satisfied? If you’re honest with yourself, you will find that you aren’t. Maybe you’ve become so far detached, that like any branch that has withered, you feel nothing but emptiness and complacency. Maybe you’ve felt this way for so long that it feels comfortable and normal, yet something deep down is screaming inside you that there’s more. It’s there. It’s free. It’s just up to us to choose it and remain in it. When I stop and think about all of this, it is so unfathomable at times, yet I know that there is nothing else and no other way to be and feel alive. Choose life.
